The next term of Council begins on December 1, 2018 and concludes in 2022. The Nomination period opens on May 1, 2018 and closes on Nomination Day, July 27, 2018. To run for office, you must be an eligible elector in the Municipality of Huron Shores. This means that you must be: A Canadian Citizen; At least 18 years of age; Reside in the Municipality, or be the owner or tenant of land in the Municipality, or the spouse of such owner or tenant; and Not prohibited from voting under any law. Clerk/Administrator Deborah Tonelli Municipality of Huron Shores 7 Bridge Street, PO Box 460 Iron Bridge, Ontario, P0R 1H0 Phone: 705-843-2033 Email: debbie@huronshores.ca For what Offices In the Municipality of Huron Shores, Municipal Elections are held for the Offices of: Mayor (one – elected at large) Councillors (two elected per ward, 4 wards) Trustee – English Language Public – Algoma District School Board (Central Algoma – Ward 1 – one to be elected, Northshore – Wards 2-4 – one to be elected) Trustee – French Language Public – Conseil scolaire de district du Grand Nord de l’Ontario (Zone 2 – one to be elected) Trustee – English Language Catholic – Huron – Superior Catholic District School Board (East – two to be elected) Trustee – French Language Catholic – Conceil scolaire de district catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (Zone 1 – one to be elected) The representation for school board elections are subject to change in the year of the Election based on a formula for each Board which determines representation to an elector population of the Board’s jurisdiction in accordance with the Education Act of Ontario. Eligibility Generally, in order to run for an office, one must be an eligible elector for the office. Criteria for eligibility is contained in the Municipal Election Act, Municipal Act, and Education Act (for school board elections). For a full description of qualification, please refer to the applicable pieces of legislation listed above. Qualifications for offices include: residency within the municipality; or own or lease land within the municipality (or spouse or same sex partner of such person); and on Voting Day be a Canadian citizen at least 18 years of age, and not be prohibited from voting for any other reason. The voter qualification period begins on the first Tuesday after Labour Day in an Election year and continues until Voting Day; however elected candidates must continue to be qualified throughout the term of office. How And When A Candidate May Register For Office Nomination Day is Friday July 27, 2018 from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. Candidates may withdraw a nomination anytime up until 2:00 pm on July 27th. Nomination papers may be filed prior to Nomination Day anytime after May 1st, 2018 during normal office hours of the Municipal Office (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday). In previous Election years, the nomination period began on January 1st of an Election Year. The recent changes to the Municipal Elections Act have shortened the nomination period to May 1st through to 2:00 pm on July 27th. Applications for Nomination may be obtained in the Municipal Office or by clicking on this link. The Nomination Forms are available for the period from May 1st to July 27th. The Nomination must be on the prescribed form and be accompanied by the prescribed $100 filing fee ($200 if seeking the office of Mayor) payable by cash, certified cheque or money order. Candidates may only spend or raise funds for their campaign after they have filed their nomination papers. In addition, the following two (2) forms must be submitted with the Nomination papers: Form EL18(A) – Declaration of Qualifications 2018 – Municipal Council Form El52 – Consent to Release Personal Information A candidate may only run for one office, but should more than one nomination form be filed by a candidate, the last nomination filed will be deemed filed, and all previous nominations deemed withdrawn. Filing a second or more nomination also impacts on campaign funds and expenditures. Potential candidates should consult with the Clerk/Administrator before considering this. Nominations are certified or rejected by the Clerk/Administrator on the Monday following Nomination Day. In 2018 that will be Monday, July 30th, 2018.
