Emergency Preparedness Week – Stay Safe During an Outage⚡ Power outages can happen at any time—whether they last for minutes, hours, or even days. It’s important to be prepared so you can stay safe and reduce the impact on your household. As part of our ongoing emergency preparedness efforts, we encourage residents to review these key safety tips: 🔋 Stock Your Emergency KitEnsure your emergency preparedness kit includes portable light sources (flashlights, candles, glow sticks), extra batteries, non-perishable foods, and plenty of potable water. ⚠️ Avoid Downed Power LinesDowned or live power lines can pose a deadly risk. Always stay at least 10 metres (the length of a school bus) away. Even if they appear inactive, wires that have been down for days may still be live. 🥶 Protect Your FoodKeep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to preserve food. Never use charcoal or gas barbecues, camping stoves, or generators indoors—these can create deadly carbon monoxide. 🚶♂️ Know When to GoIf your home becomes too cold or too hot during an outage and it’s safe to do so, consider relocating to a safer location until power is restored. Take all household members, including pets, with you. For more tips and resources on emergency preparedness, visit ontario.ca/BePrepared. Stay safe and be prepared!
