Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement due to smoke from wildfires burning in northern Ontario impacting air quality across the region. Residents may notice hazy skies, a strong smell of smoke, and difficulty breathing outdoors. Poor air quality may continue throughout the day and into Tuesday in some areas.

🔍 Affected Areas:

  • Sault Ste. Marie – St. Joseph Island
  • Elliot Lake – Ranger Lake
  • Blind River – Thessalon
  • Timmins – Cochrane – Iroquois Falls

⚠️ Health Impacts

Even short-term exposure to wildfire smoke can cause symptoms like:

  • Coughing, sore throat, and irritated eyes
  • Headaches and mild shortness of breath

Those at higher risk include:

  • Seniors
  • Infants and young children
  • Pregnant individuals
  • People with heart or lung conditions
  • Outdoor workers and those with chronic illnesses

If you experience serious symptoms—like chest pain, wheezing, or severe difficulty breathing—seek medical attention immediately.

✅ How to Protect Yourself:

  • Stay indoors when possible, especially during heavy smoke
  • Keep windows and doors closed to reduce indoor smoke
  • Use air purifiers or run your HVAC system with clean filters
  • Avoid outdoor exercise or physical work until air quality improves
  • Check in on vulnerable neighbours or family members
