January is Alzheimer Awareness Month January is Alzheimer Awareness Month The Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Huron Shores at the January 14th, 2015 Regular Meeting passed Resolution #15-01-23 as follows: “WHEREAS Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are degenerative brain disorders that affect over 750,000 Canadians, or 15% of Canadians over the age of 65; AND WHEREAS between 2% and 10% of all cases of dementia start before the age of 65; AND WHEREAS a disproportionate number of Canadians with Alzheimer’s disease are women; AND WHEREAS Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias take their toll on hundreds of thousands of families and caregivers; AND WHEREAS early diagnosis of dementia helps people live better with dementia and allows them to make important decisions about their future needs; AND WHEREAS it is time to put our minds to it, to rethink Dementia and to do the things we can do to help lessen the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, such as keeping our brains healthy and pro-actively work on supports; AND WHEREAS Creating Dementia Friendly Communities can be our first step to help reduce the burden of dementia in Canada; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Huron Shores does hereby proclaim the month of January, 2015, as National Alzheimer Awareness Month and do urge all citizens of our community to become more aware and educated concerning the early signs and symptoms and far-reading effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.” For more information regarding Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, and available local resources please visit the website of the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste.
