Public Advisory: Building Permits

Before beginning any construction or renovation projects, it is essential to obtain the proper building permits. These permits ensure your project meets local building codes and safety standards, protecting both your investment and the safety of future occupants. According to the Ontario Building Code, a building permit is not required for constructions under 160 sq. ft. Building Permits and Fees:

New Construction Permits:

• Residential: $0.6125 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $735.00)
• Farm Buildings: $0.2540 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $635.00)
• Commercial/Institutional: $0.7000 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $840.00)
• Industrial: $0.3040 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $760.00)

Addition Permits:

• Residential, Commercial, Institutional, Industrial: $0.5291 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $635.00)
• Farm Buildings: $0.2240 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $560.00)

Renovation Permits (if required):

• Residential: $0.5291 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $635.00)
• Commercial, Institutional, Industrial: $0.3040 per sq. ft. (Minimum fee: $760.00)

Other Permits:

• Accessory Buildings (< 160 sq. ft.): No charge
• Accessory Buildings (> 160 sq. ft.): $170.00
• Minor Renovations (Decks, Patios, Carports, Roofs, Windows, Doors, etc.): $100.00

Demolition Permit: $75.00

Occupancy Permit:

• Temporary: $50.00
• Final: $50.00

Important Notes:

• All fees are exempt from HST.
• Failure to obtain the necessary permits before starting your project will result in a penalty of double the original permit fee.
• Minimum permit fees are based on the following square footage:
  • Residential: 1,200 sq. ft.
  • Farm Buildings: 2,500 sq. ft.
  • Commercial/Institutional: 1,200 sq. ft.
  • Industrial: 2,500 sq. ft.
