Reminder: Fire Prevention Week & Annual Open Houses: October 6-12, 2013 Fire Prevention Week is from October 6th-12th, 2013 and the message this year is: Prevent Kitchen Fires. As part of Fire Prevention Week the Huron Shores Fire Department is hosting its Annual Open Houses on Tuesday, October 8th at the Iron Bridge Fire Hall (10 John St.) and Thursday, October 10th (Little Rapids Fire Hall, 73 Little Rapids Rd.) from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Come out and meet your volunteer fire department personnel, enjoy barbecue refreshments, family-friendly activities and equipment demos. To support public awareness, the Office the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) has teamed up with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) this year. During Fire Prevention Week and while supplies last, brochures titled The Perfect Meal will be available for Ontarians to pick up at all 638 LCBO retail stores across the province, including those in our community. In addition, kids aged 10 and up may learn about Kitchen Fire Safety by participating in the What’s Cooking for Teens program at Iron Bridge on Monday, October 7th and in Little Rapids on Wednesday, October 9th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Participants will then be able to help with the refreshments during the respective Open House events. This is a free program. For more information or to register contact Kathy at 705-297-0039 or e-mail FPO VanDelft at henk@huronshores.ca. An exciting initiative geared to families and children is the Keeping Our Kids Safe – A Recipe for Fire Safety campaign has been developed by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, the campaign encourages Ontario families to complete “The Recipe for Fire Safety Checklist” at http://www.firesafetyrecipe.ca/family/recipe/ and enter the contest. Families can participate during Fire Prevention Week or any time during the month of October. The Office of the Fire Marshal advises of these important steps to prevent kitchen fires: Pay attention when cooking – especially if you are using oil or high temperatures. If you must leave for any reason, turn off the stove. Wear tight-fitting or rolled up sleeves when using the stove. Loose, dangling clothing can easily catch fire. Keep a proper fitting lid near the stove. If a pot catches fire, slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove. Never attempt to move a burning pot. Keep a close eye on anyone in your household who is drinking and attempts to cook.
