With the now, hopefully, warmer weather settling in, area Farmers’ Markets are starting for the season offering locally grown fruits and vegetables, and an array of other items:

  • The Sustain Algoma Expo and the first Johnson Farmers’ Market in Desbarats is being held on Saturday, June 3/17 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Admission to this event is free, but donations will be accepted. Visit their website for details.
  • The Sowerby Farmers’ Market kicks off on Saturday, June 10/17 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Historic Cordukes/Weber 12-Sided Barn located at 1410 Basswood Lake Road.  The Market will run every Saturday until October 7/17.  Local food producers and artisans offer seasonal fresh veggies and fruit, homemade baked goods, jams, jellies, pickles, handicrafts, and more.  Vendor tables are $5.00/day.  Call Will at 705-843-5567 to book a table.
  • Iron Bridge Historical Museum, 1 James St.

    The Iron Bridge Historical Museum, 1 James St.,  opens for the season on Thursday, June 15/17 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  It is open daily until the end of September.  The Museum also hosts the Iron Bridge Farmers’ Market is opening on Saturdays  beginning June 17/17, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the covered gazebo.   Markets will be held weekly until the end of September.  Items available will include farm produce, book and yard sale items, as well, consignment items may also be included (depending on storage availability). Table rentals are $5/table/day. Contact Carl at 705-843-2486 for details.  The Museum displays items that illustrate our area’s rich agricultural and logging history.  Special exhibits/events are held throughout the year.  Other amenities available for visitors’ comfort include picnic tables, benches and accessible public washrooms.

Flea Markets and Yard Sales are also popping up everywhere:  Be sure to take in the Annual Iron Bridge Flea Market at the Recreation Centre, 1 Chiblow Lake Rd. on Saturday, June 3/17 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Who knows what potential treasures may await you?
