Trucks & Equipment ExplainedOn Wednesday, June 10th, 2015,  Huron Shores Fire Department personnel participated in the Ontario Fire Marshal’s “Swing into Summer Safety ” Campaign by hosting Mrs. Elkin’s Grade 3/4 class from Thessalon Public School at the Little Rapids Fire Station.  The students assisted with equipment demonstrations, practiced the proper method of escaping from a burning building by crawling across the floor, enjoyed pizza and snacks and everyone received a Swing into Summer Safety T-shirt, a Swing into Summer Safety collector tumbler and a set of Toronto Blue Jays baseball cards with summer safety tips printed on them.

Winner of the Blue Jays Tickets with Deputy Chief Stn 2 Scott Richards, Sparky, Deputy Chief Stn 1 Dave Smith, & Fire Chief Gib MedveThe Fire Department had asked each student to write a short paragraph and draw a picture explaining what Summer Safety meant to them.  The top five entries each received a Blue Jays baseball cap, and the Grand Prize winner received 4 field level tickets to a Blue Jays game.  The Grand Prize Winner’s message was about camp fire safety.  The Fire Department personnel were impressed by the quality and in-depth knowledge the students displayed in their assignments.  Sparky, the Fire Safety Dog, made a guest appearance to hand out the prizes.

June 10th is Fire Safety Day and part of the Swing into Summer Safety campaign, a provincial campaign aiming to raise awareness about summer safety and to keep kids safe throughout the summer, and involving more than 200 fire departments. Swing into Summer Safety was also launched in the Municipality of Huron Shores, North Huron, Welland, Timmins and Prince Edward County.  Fire Safety Day and the campaign are sponsored by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, in partnership with the Toronto Blue Jays, Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, Toronto Fire Services, Enbridge, Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Kidde Canada and Roxul Inc.
