Survey Feedback Request re: Canada Post & Local Mail Addressing ATTENTION CANADA POST MAIL RECIPIENTS IN HURON SHORES “IMPORTANT INFORMATION REQUIRED” REGARDING CANADA POST AND LOCAL MAIL ADDRESSING FOR ALL OF HURON SHORES YOUR FEEDBACK IS RESPECTFULLY REQUESTED Residents of Huron Shores are asked to please watch for a short survey, mailed out July 26th, requesting input on proposed changes to their Canada Post mail addressing. Completed surveys must be returned to the Municipal Office by 4:30 p.m., Monday, August 8th, 2011. For background information please read the following: Canada Post approached Council earlier this year, indicating that it was necessary for that agency to make changes to the rural mail delivery from the Thessalon Post Office and that the change could come as early as this October. Although Canada Post does not currently require the same change for rural mail out of the Iron Bridge and Blind River Post offices, dependent upon the results of this survey, these addresses could also be affected this fall in conjunction with the Thessalon Post Office change. There is also a possibility that current rural mail service from Blind River could be changed to receive rural delivery out of the Iron Bridge Post Office. Canada Post advises that it intends to utilize the 911 number and street address system to pinpoint specific rural mailboxes for letter and parcel delivery, currently identified by Rural Route numbering. This change may or may not cause a change in postal codes. Canada Post will advise of this. Address changes initiated by Canada Post require specific processes to make its customers aware of the change in order that those customers can notify government agencies, financial institutions, utility companies, personal contacts, etc., of the new mail address format. Canada Post has approached the Municipality, to advise that should the Municipality desire to change the “city” indicator portion of the address to “Huron Shores,” from the Thessalon, Iron Bridge and Blind River Post Office identifiers, this could be incorporated with the Canada Post address change notice. As Thessalon is the first to be affected, and if the Municipality chooses not to change to Huron Shores, current Thessalon rural mailing addresses will appear as being identified as Thessalon, Ontario street addresses. As a result, it may be necessary to change some street names to avoid confusion with similar street names within the Town of Thessalon jurisdiction. Canada Post representatives assured Council that at this time, there is no intention to eliminate any of the existing post offices. The purpose of this notice and survey is to obtain the opinion of as many Huron Shores mail customers as possible, of whether there is interest in, support for, or objection to, changing your mailing addresses to become “Huron Shores, Ontario”. Hence, Council desires as much feedback as possible from residents in all areas of this municipality to assist with the important decision of whether or not the Municipal corporate name of “Huron Shores” should, or should not, become the “city, province” mailing address of “Huron Shores, Ontario”. It is important that you understand that while Canada Post has indicated that the street number and name change is mandatory, the “city” identifier change to “Huron Shores, Ontario” is not mandatory. Your feedback is critical prior to Council making a decision.
