Floods are among the most common and costly natural disasters in Canada — and they can happen at any time of year. Whether caused by heavy rain, rapid snowmelt, or ice jams, floods can develop slowly or occur suddenly with little warning.

As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, the Municipality of Huron Shores is encouraging all residents to understand the risks and take steps to stay safe.

🔎 Know the Risks

Flooding can:

  • Damage homes, property, and critical infrastructure
  • Disrupt roadways and essential services
  • Pose serious safety hazards for people and animals

Communities near rivers, lakes, or low-lying areas are especially vulnerable — but floods can happen anywhere.

🛠️ Be Prepared

Take these steps to reduce your risk:

  • Know your area’s flood risk – Check if your home is in a flood-prone zone.
  • Keep drains and culverts clear – Debris can block water flow and worsen flooding.
  • Have an emergency plan – Make sure every family member knows what to do if a flood occurs.
  • Prepare an emergency kit – Include essentials such as water, food, flashlights, batteries, medications, and important documents.

📦 What to Do During a Flood

  • Move to higher ground if safe to do so
  • Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters
  • Follow official alerts and advisories
  • Turn off utilities if instructed by authorities
