Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay will be passing through Huron Shores on Saturday, December 17th as it travels from Blind River to Thessalon along Highway 17. The Municipality of Huron Shores has selected Mrs. Elva Arnill to be the municipal Medal-Bearer in the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay. Mrs. Arnill was born and raised on a farm in Pickford, Michigan, in 1931. While training as a nurse in 1954, at the Plummer Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, she was introduced to a fellow classmate’s brother, Lorne Arnill. They were married shortly thereafter and began their life together on a farm in Parkinson Township. Ten years later they built the home in Iron Bridge in which Elva continues to reside. It was also in 1954 that Elva was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She had experienced unexplained physical symptoms for a number of years prior to this date. Despite what was a potentially devastating prognosis, she married, raised 2 daughters and to this day is an active participant in community life. For a number of years Elva had utilized a wheelchair only when out-of-doors but recently she has required its assistance indoors as well. She stated that she is “very thankful” regarding the slow progression of the disease. Elva continues to volunteer with the Iron Bridge United Church and with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, (notably selling carnations for its fundraising campaign for over 30 years!). Mrs. Arnill will be participating in The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay on Saturday, December 17th as it passes through Iron Bridge on Highway 17 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Come out and show your support for this remarkable lady and all of the relay participants.
